📖 Eye Terror Tactics: How Not to Die Blinking in Don't Starve

Eye of Terror: Boss Guide

Terraria's Crossover Boss in Don't Starve Together

A comprehensive guide to defeating the gruesome eyeball boss and its mechanical twins in The Constant.

Eye of Terror Overview

The Eye of Terror is a gruesome giant eyeball boss introduced in Don't Starve Together (DST) as part of the Terraria crossover "An Eye for An Eye" update. This otherworldly menace is inspired by Terraria's Eye of Cthulhu and is exclusive to DST - it doesn't exist in single-player Don't Starve worlds.

Eye of Terror Boss

The Eye of Terror watches for its next victim in The Constant

Key Features

  • Summoned using a Terrarium found in Conspicuous Chests
  • Has 5,000 HP and two distinct phases
  • Spawns Suspicious Peeper minions during the fight
  • Awards unique loot including the Eye Mask and Milky Whites
  • Has a tougher variant: the Twins of Terror

Summoning the Eye of Terror

The Terrarium

Unlike seasonal giants that spawn automatically, the Eye of Terror must be deliberately summoned using a special item called the Terrarium.

The Terrarium

The Terrarium contains a small swirling tree that summons the Eye of Terror when activated

How to Find the Terrarium:

  1. 1

Locate a Conspicuous Chest in your world, typically found in Forest biomes.

  2. 2

The chest has a distinct red-and-black appearance and may be surrounded by pig torches.

Warning: Opening the chest will turn nearby pig torch guards into werepigs!

  3. 3

Open the chest to find the Terrarium along with some random loot (weapons, tools, resources).

  4. 4

Take the Terrarium to a suitable location for the boss fight.

Summoning Process:

  1. 1

Place the Terrarium on the ground in an open area away from your base.

  2. 2

Activate the Terrarium during evening or night. It will emit a teal beam of light into the sky.

  3. 3

At the beginning of the next night, the Eye of Terror will spawn near a player with the message: "You feel an evil presence watching you..."

  4. 4

The Eye will immediately target whoever it spawns near, regardless of who activated the Terrarium.

Pro Tip

If you don't defeat the Eye of Terror by dawn, it will despawn but retain its remaining health. You can re-summon it on subsequent nights to continue the fight. The Eye slowly regenerates 250 HP per night if you skip a night.

Summoning the Twins of Terror

For a greater challenge, you can summon the Twins of Terror instead:

  • Add one Nightmare Fuel to the Terrarium before activating it
  • The plant inside will wither and turn crimson
  • At night, Retinazor and Spazmatism will appear instead of the Eye of Terror
  • Important: If you don't reactivate the Terrarium the night after summoning the Twins, it becomes dormant for 15 days

Eye of Terror Mechanics

Health

5,000 HP

Damage

~50 damage

Sanity Aura

-100/minute

Phase 1 (5,000 - 3,250 HP)

Attack Pattern
  • Charging Attack: The Eye lunges at the player, dealing area damage on impact. Can hit multiple targets.
  • Egg Spawning: After each charge, the Eye spawns one "Egg of Terror" that hatches into a Suspicious Peeper minion.
Eye of Terror Phase 1

Phase 2 (Below 3,250 HP)

Attack Pattern
  • Rapid Charges: The Eye performs 3-5 consecutive charges before pausing.
  • Double Eggs: Now spawns two Eggs of Terror at once, potentially doubling the number of minions.
  • Slam Attack: If players get too close, the Eye slams down creating a temporary sinkhole that slows movement.
  • Visual Change: The Eye grows a large toothy maw and becomes more aggressive.
Eye of Terror Phase 2

Suspicious Peeper Minions

  • Small one-eyed creatures that hatch from Eggs of Terror
  • Behave like aggressive hounds - chase and bite players
  • Low health but can overwhelm in large numbers
  • Will attack anything nearby, including other creatures

Behavior Quirks

  • The Eye will pursue players anywhere on the surface once summoned
  • Its charges can hit other creatures, potentially causing them to fight the Eye
  • You can lead the Eye into other mobs or bosses for them to damage each other

Strategies for Defeating the Eye

Prioritize the Minions

A critical tip for this fight is to destroy the Suspicious Peeper eggs as soon as they spawn, before they hatch. The tiny eye-creatures can quickly overwhelm you if several hatch and start swarming.

  • Each egg only takes a few hits to break
  • In Phase 2, destroy both eggs quickly to prevent being overwhelmed
  • If peepers hatch, kill them before returning to damage the boss

Use Allies or Mobs

You can leverage the environment or followers to help defeat the Eye of Terror:

  • Kite the Eye into a herd of Beefalo (especially during mating season)
  • Use Pigmen or Bunnymen followers as an army against the Eye
  • If playing as Winona, set up Catapults to automatically target the Eye
  • Lead the Eye into fights with other bosses like Deerclops

Kiting and Dodging

For direct combat with the Eye of Terror:

  • Run perpendicular to its charge direction to dodge
  • In Phase 1, land 1-2 hits after dodging a charge
  • In Phase 2, wait for all 3-5 charges to finish before counter-attacking
  • Sidestep out of sinkhole areas created by slam attacks

Equipment Recommendations

Armor

Football Helmet + Log Suit

Weapon

Dark Sword or Tentacle Spike

Light Source

Miner Hat or Lantern

Healing

Pierogi, Jerky, or Healing Salve

Team Tactics

In multiplayer, coordination makes the fight much easier:

  • Designate one player as the tank (Wolfgang or Wigfrid work well)
  • Have other players focus on destroying eggs and minions
  • Attack the Eye from different angles to increase damage uptime
  • Rotate roles if someone gets low on health or sanity

Emergency Measures

If things go south, you can stall until dawn. The Eye will disappear at daybreak, and you can heal up before summoning it again the next night to continue the fight. Just be aware that if you let too many nights pass, the Eye will slowly heal (250 HP per skipped night).

Eye of Terror Loot

Eye Mask

A headgear with 80% damage absorption. Can be repaired by "feeding" it food items. When fed glowing food (Light Bulbs, Glow Berries), it emits light.

Milky Whites (3-5)

Dairy food items that can be used in crock pot recipes like Ice Cream, Frozen Banana Daiquiri, and Bunny Stew. Also required to adopt a Friendly Peeper pet.

Monster Meat (2-4)

Standard monster meat, useful for feeding to pigs or cooking.

Eye of Terror Loot

The Eye Mask provides excellent protection and can be repaired by feeding it food

Pro Tip: Friendly Peeper Pet

Don't forget that you can use a Milky White to adopt a Friendly Peeper pet! At the Rock Den, trade 1 Milky White and 1 Bacon and Eggs to get an adorable miniature Eye of Terror that will follow you around.

The Twins of Terror

For players seeking a tougher challenge, the Twins of Terror - named Retinazor and Spazmatism - are an optional boss duo that can be summoned instead of the Eye of Terror. They are essentially two mechanical floating eyes with metal tendrils, clearly inspired by Terraria's Twins boss.

Twins of Terror

Retinazor (red eye) and Spazmatism (green eye) are a challenging mechanical duo

Health

10,000 HP Each

Combined Sanity Drain

-200/minute

Phase Change

After 7,000 Combined HP Lost
or One Twin Dies

Twin Behavior

Retinazor (Red Eye)

  • Prioritizes summoning minions more than charging
  • Slower charges but from longer distances
  • In Phase 2, gains laser-like attacks and sinkhole slams
  • Acts as the "ranged" fighter of the pair

Spazmatism (Green Eye)

  • More aggressive with frequent charges
  • Spawns fewer minions than Retinazor
  • In Phase 2, becomes extremely relentless with consecutive charges
  • More dangerous when left alone in Phase 2

Twins Strategy

This battle is much harder than the solo Eye, essentially a "raid boss" experience. Key tactics include:

Divide and Conquer
  • Use a Pan Flute to put both Twins to sleep at the start
  • Wake one (usually Spazmatism) and lure it away from the sleeping twin
  • Focus on killing Spazmatism first if possible
Burst Damage
  • Consider using Gunpowder traps to deal massive initial damage
  • Wolfgang with Mighty form or Wigfrid with special foods can dish out high DPS
Multiplayer Tactics
  • Assign one player to each twin to separate them
  • Use Wigfrid's Battle Songs to buff the team
  • Winona can set up Catapults for auto-damage
  • Coordinate when one twin falls - everyone should converge on the remaining one

Important Notice

If you don't reactivate the Terrarium to continue fighting the Twins on the very next night after an incomplete battle, the Terrarium will lock for 15 days. This forces you to either finish them in one night or commit to consecutive nights of fighting until victory.

Twins of Terror Loot

Shield of Terror

An off-hand weapon/armor combo that deals 51 damage per hit and blocks 80% of incoming damage. Can be fed food to repair and emits light when fed glowing foods.

Mechanical Loot

Each twin drops 3-5 Gears, 1-2 Frazzled Wires, and 2-3 Electrical Doodads. Retinazor drops a Yellow Gem while Spazmatism drops a Green Gem.

Lore and Connections

Origins and References

The Eye of Terror and Twins of Terror were added as part of a lighthearted crossover and are not formally part of the Don't Starve story canon. They represent creatures from Terraria's world that somehow found their way into The Constant.

  • The Eye of Terror is DST's interpretation of Terraria's Eye of Cthulhu
  • The Twins of Terror are based on The Twins from Terraria (Retinazor and Spazmatism)
  • The spawn messages ("You feel an evil presence watching you..." and "This is going to be a terrible night...") are direct quotes from Terraria

Character Quotes

Wanda

"I feel a shiver of interdimensionality in the air..."

(When examining the Terrarium)

Wigfrid

"Dö thine wörst, föul metal fiend!"

(When the Eye of Terror spawns)

Maxwell

"At least dealing with that monstrosity was good for something."

(When obtaining the Shield of Terror)

Eye of the Storm Confusion

Important Clarification

Despite the similar name, Return of Them: Eye of the Storm is a separate DST update (the finale of the lunar island saga) that has no direct relation to the Eye of Terror. The Eye of the Storm update introduced the Celestial Champion, which is a lunar entity that appears as a floating eye in its final form, but is not connected to the Terraria crossover.

DST vs. Don't Starve Single-Player

The Eye of Terror and Twins of Terror are exclusive to Don't Starve Together. If you are playing the single-player Don't Starve (or the Shipwrecked/Hamlet expansions), you will not encounter these bosses unless you use a mod.

Final Tip

After defeating these bosses, proudly display your new Eye of Terror and Twins statues at your base. Not only do they look cool, but they also serve as reminders... that in the Constant, the eyes are always upon you – sometimes from beyond worlds. Good luck, and happy staring down those terrors!
